Short answer

For eye care, stock-formula orders typically start at 500 units and newly developed formulas at 3,000 units. The number is not arbitrary — it is set by the shortest economical production run, which is driven by substrate and packaging minimums rather than by the formula itself.

The practical way to size a first order is to work backwards from your sell-through assumption, not forwards from the MOQ. If you expect to move 300 units a month, a 500-unit order is roughly three months of stock — reasonable. A 3,000-unit custom run at the same velocity is roughly ten months, which is usually too much inventory risk for an unproven SKU.

Two things catch first-time buyers out. First, packaging tooling often has its own minimum print run that exceeds the product MOQ — so a custom printed box can push your effective minimum higher than the unit count suggests. Second, unit price tiers are stepped, so the jump from 500 to 3,000 units often changes unit cost more than buyers expect.

Frequently asked questions

Is the MOQ per SKU or per order?

Per SKU. A three-SKU launch means three separate minimums, though mixed-variety packs can sometimes be structured to help.

Can I order a smaller pilot than 500 units?

Sometimes, at a higher unit price and usually on stock formulas only. Ask — the answer depends on what is already scheduled on the line.

Does sampling count toward the MOQ?

No. Samples are produced separately for evaluation before the production run.

How does MOQ affect unit price?

Unit price falls in steps as quantity rises, because setup and changeover costs are spread over more units. We quote tiers rather than a single price.

Formulating an eye-care product?

Send your target market, dosage form and estimated quantity — we reply with formulation advice, MOQ tiers, compliance notes and samples.
