Short answer

Choose private label / ODM if your priority is speed, low upfront cost, or testing whether the category works for your audience. Choose a custom formula if you need a defensible product, a specific claim, or a texture and scent profile nobody else sells.

ODM means you select from proven formulas in the manufacturer's library and apply your brand, packaging and — optionally — a fragrance or active tweak. Typical MOQ is 500 units, sampling takes about 7–15 days, and there is no development fee. The honest downside: competitors can buy the same base formula, so your differentiation lives in branding, packaging and positioning, not in the formula itself.

OEM custom development means the formula is built to your brief: your actives, your texture, your sensory profile, your claims. It carries development cost, a higher MOQ (generally from 3,000 units) and a longer timeline, because stability, compatibility and sometimes safety testing have to be run before production.

The pragmatic path most brands actually take: launch on ODM to prove demand, then move the winner to a custom formula once volume justifies it. Switching later is normal and we keep the sealed reference sample so the transition does not lose the sensory profile you validated.

Frequently asked questions

Can I start ODM and switch to OEM later?

Yes. We keep the sealed reference sample, so a later custom development can be matched to the sensory profile you already validated with customers.

Is an ODM formula really the same as competitors'?

The base can be. What is not shared is your packaging, fragrance direction, active adjustments at the margins, and how you position it.

Do you sign an NDA before discussing my formula?

Yes, if you prefer — an NDA can be signed before requirement discussions.

What does custom development cost?

It depends on how far the formula is from an existing base. We quote after the brief, not before, because a realistic number needs the actives and claims in front of us.
